Rugby-Australia hooker Polota-Nau vows to stay aggressive

7/3/2011, 09:32
SYDNEY, March 7 (Reuters) - Fearless hooker NBA jerseys Tatafu Polota-Nau will not change his fierce attack on opponents and the ball despite the chance of harming his World Cup prospects through injury, the ailing Wallaby said on Monday. "There's no point holding back when you're on the field, you have to give it everything you can, even with a World Cup this year," said the 25-year-old, who hobbled off with a knee injury during the New South Wales Waratahs loss to the Canterbury Crusaders on Friday. "My main focus at the moment is Super rugby and helping the Waratahs have a big season, I'll continue to prepare week in and week out as normal." Polota-Nau, who has resembled a human wrecking ball in the opening weeks of the southern hemisphere provincial competition, was upbeat about his injury, flagging the possibility of recovering in time for the Sydney-based Waratahs' next match. The Waratahs play South African strugglers the Cheetahs at Sydney Football Stadium on March 19 after a bye this week. "As far as the injury goes, it's much better that it's the PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) rather than the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament)," he said. "It's going to be a day-to-day proposition and so the bye couldn't have come at a better time." The Sydney-born Tongan signed a two-year contract extension with the Australian Rugby Union and remained committed to staying with the Waratahs, he added in a release from the governing body. "Once I knew I was staying in Australia, my preference was always to remain at NSW and thankfully I've been able to do that." Polota-Nau joins a raft of young Wallaby players to re-sign with NBA ALL Star the ARU in recent weeks and his signature was welcomed by Australia coach Robbie Deans, whose front row stocks were decimated by injury last year. "Tatafu is an X-factor player. He's one of those players who has a massive influence, both on a game, but also on the people he is around," Deans said.

Mexico: Arrest in shooting of Paraguay footballer

19/1/2011, 08:47
MEXICO CITY (AP)—A fugitive suspect wanted ugg boots sale in last year’s near-fatal bar shooting of Salvador Cabanas, a former star for Paraguay’s national football team and Mexico’s Club America, was arrested in the Mexican capital on Tuesday. Jose Jorge Balderas, who is known by his initials “J.J.” and allegedly has ties with Mexico’s drug trade, was arrested in a wealthy neighborhood of Mexico City, Federal Public Safety Department Anti-Drug Division chief Ramon Eduardo Pequeno said in a news conference. Balderas was exhibited at the news conference with his hair slicked back and his dark beard trimmed. He stood with his hands crossed as two heavily armed masked members of the security force grasped his shoulders. Pequeno said Balderas denied shooting Cabanas and instead blamed Francisco Jose Barreto Garcia, who was arrested last year in the case. Balderas “said the incident happened when he entered the bathroom and encountered Salvador Cabanas and asked for permission to use the toilet,” according to Pequeno. He added that the suspect told investigators the football player “reacted in an aggressive manner, both verbally and physically.” Right then Garcia, who oversaw Balderas’ security at the time, entered and shot Cabanas in the head at close range, Balderas allegedly said. Witnesses have said Cabanas and Balderas got into an argument when Balderas questioned the Paraguayan’s performances for his club. Cabanas was shot in the head at close range. Cabanas miraculously survived the Jan. 25 shooting but is not expected to return to football. His shooting months before the 2010 World Cup in nike air max shoes South Africa rocked Paraguay’s national team, which had expected to field him as a starring player. Balderas was arrested along with six other suspected members of a drug ring that authorities say J.J. established after going into hiding following the Cabanas shooting. The ring distributed cocaine and weapons from its base in the Mexico City suburb of Huixquilucan, Pequeno said. Among those arrested was a woman identified as a professional model and Balderas’ lover. The group was arrested carrying false IDs, along with what appeared to be bags of cocaine, guns and ammo, Pequeno said. Pequeno said that Balderas admitted he knew the top leaders of the Beltran Leyva cartel and would attend parties with them. Authorities had long suspected that Balderas was an associate of purported drug lord Edgar Valdez Villarreal, known as “La Barbie,” who was arrested last year. According to a transcript released by Mexican authorities, Valdez told investigators he helped Balderas hide on the outskirts of Mexico City for about three months following the shooting. In Paraguay, Cabanas’s brother-in-law, Amancio Rojas, said Balderas’ arrest could “help us learn the truth behind why this tragedy happened.” “Salvador’s family members hope the presumed aggressor winter boots 5760 says why he attacked him,” said Rojas, who is married to Cabanas’ sister.

Mazzarri working on Napoli belief

15/1/2011, 04:08
ROME (AFP) - While the traditional Nike Shox shoes Italian giants AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus usually compete for Serie A honours, this season has been enlivened by some unexpectedly strong showings from other teams. As a result the scudetto race has an unfamiliar look about it. Heading into this weekend's games, Napoli sit second in the table, just ahead of third-placed Lazio, with Roma fourth and Palermo fifth. Only Milan on top are occupying a position expected of them as arch rivals Inter languish in seventh, one place behind Juve. And while most people are still expecting at least Inter to hit back and run Milan close, there are a growing number starting to believe in Napoli's chances. At times the southerners have looked the best team in terms of the football they play, although they are hamstrung by two problems: an inability to turn their good play and chances into goals and a propensity to leak a few too many at crucial times. However coach Walter Mazzarri is trying to convince his players that they have what it takes to go all the way. And he claimed that last week's 3-0 defeat of Juve was proof that his team were as good as anyone in the league. "I'm truly satisfied and proud, few sides manage to express themselves as we did," he said after that game. "It's a pleasure to see us play in this way. We applied our system, showed strength, mentality and organisation. "It would be hard to play better than that. I have to discount ugg boot compliment the players who are doing amazing things, only a great team could impose itself in that way against Juve." The message doesn't seem to be getting through to everyone, though, with Christian Maggio one of those players who doesn't believe his side can upset the odds. "We're doing well but I don't think we're ready to win the league," he said. "I would sign right now if we were offered a place in the Champions League, that would be a great achievement." Mazzarri clearly wants more, though, and is telling his players to simply concentrate on getting better. "I don't look at the table, I'm just saying that we're making great progress and that we want to continue doing so," he added. "You can see that we're organised and can play. We don't just play with heart but we've also got good football brains. "However we can't stop, we can never relax our concentration if we want to stay at the top. "We've already shown that when we play our best we can beat anyone but at the same time we can never lower our guard." Napoli trail Milan by four points but the league leaders have looked vulnerable at times this season. Their last two home games have seen them lose 1-0 to Roma and then scramble an injury-time equaliser in a 4-4 draw with Udinese. On Sunday they travel to relegation threatened Lecce, who come into the game off the back of a surprise and morale-boosting 2-1 win at Lazio. "The Lazio game has given us a boost," said Brazilian Bape t-shirt forward Jeda. "Sunday we'll face another big team and we have to play without fear of making mistakes. "They're superior on paper but we can't go into the game already beaten." Inter, who have two games in hand on their rivals and could go third if they won both, host Bologna as coach Leonardo looks to maintain his 100 percent record as boss with a fourth straight win in all competitions. Lazio will look to bounce back from their Lecce humiliation at home to Sampdoria while Juventus - coming into the game off back-to-back three-goal defeats - host Bari and Roma travel to Cesena.

Les Miles has a new 7-year contract at LSU

13/1/2011, 08:12
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP)—Les Miles made it clear, in discount ugg boot his own particular way, that he is living in the present. His nostalgia for Michigan, where he played, and his enduring pride in his alma mater could not outweigh the relationships he’s built in the past six seasons at LSU, where he’s won 62 games and five bowls, including the 2007 national title. “I’m one of those guys that believe where you are at is where you live your life,” Miles said Wednesday shortly after LSU announced that the Tigers’ coach had agreed to a new contract that would keep him living down on the bayou for the next seven seasons. The announcement of Miles’ new deal came two days after Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon flew to Baton Rouge to meet with Miles about the Wolverines’ coaching vacancy that has since been filled by Brady Hoke. Miles’ annual salary will remain the same at a little more than $3.75 million. However, his new deal gives him three additional years and more opportunities win bonuses based on postseason success. LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said the contract will lend stability to a program that has already piled up an average of more than 10 victories a year since Miles arrived. Miles said that stability would only make him Nike Shox shoes a better recruiter and allow him to weather intermittent down years caused by injuries or unexpected departures of key players on account of personal or academic factors. It also should make it easier for Miles to ignore his vocal critics. Miles has been lambasted on sports call-in shows in Louisiana and even booed in Tiger Stadium when the Tigers have struggled, as they did in a memorable narrow victory over Tennessee this past season. The Tigers initially appeared to lose that game on a botched play in the final seconds, only to be rescued by a Tennessee penalty. Yet, Miles downplayed fans’ fair-weather treatment, chalking it up to a fringe element prone toward negativity. “I bet you those people don’t sing the alma mater at the end of the game, and I bet you those people don’t have tears in their eyes when the Tigers take the field,” Miles said. “I began to understand that, as a part of love and appreciation for a team, just occasionally 2,500 knuckleheads Coach sandals might boo. I think I might want to be at a place where they care greatly for the work that you do and that it’s important that you do it well. If that means that, very rarely, one or two guys might boo, I kind of understand.” It remains unclear how close Miles came to being offered the Michigan job. While Brandon has said that never happened, Miles said they had “a very substantial talk.” “I was honored by their arrival. I enjoyed the communications, the conversations,” Miles said. “My alma mater just warmed my heart.” Miles said he discussed his options with his wife and his children on Monday night, largely ignoring the telecast of the BCS championship game in which Auburn edged Oregon to run the Southeastern Conference’s string of national titles to five. Miles’ wife, Kathy, had a central role in the decision, and “tears were shed,” the coach said. Miles also let his four children weigh in. “Every one of my children are so happy here, enjoy being here, their friends, their things,” Miles said. “That’s not something that could not necessarily be maneuvered and replaced, but it did tell me they’re happy here and that was an important factor.” All the while, Miles reflected on his commitments to current players and incoming recruits, as well as assistant coaches and officials in the LSU athletic department. He described Bape t-shirt struggling to sleep through the night and lying awake around 4 a.m., talking again with Kathy. While he was leaning toward remaining at LSU, Miles said he had to consider the possibility that he could be persuaded to go to a place he’s loved since he played under the late Bo Schembechler, who later gave Miles his first assistant coaching job. “I could not have met with Michigan without the potential of a different outcome,” Miles said. “I always allowed for that, but it kept comfortably returning to the people and the commitment. I enjoy this community.” Miles also had the memory of LSU’s 41-24 Cotton Bowl triumph over Texas A&M fresh in his mind—the postgame celebration with his players and the howls of approval from rabid Tigers fans who’d traveled to Arlington, Texas. As the team bus left Cowboys Stadium, Miles sat lv handbag near redshirt freshman defensive end Sam Montgomery and freshman defensive back Tryann Mathieu. Mathieu had made big plays all season and had an interception against the Aggies. Montgomery was having early success as a pass rusher when his season was cut short by a knee injury. Miles considered their promising futures at LSU and all that went into bringing them to Baton Rouge. “I told them I was going to be here when I recruited them, and for me not to respect those people that I committed to is just very difficult,” Miles said. Then Miles, the so-called “Mad Hatter,” whose litany of quirky quotes inspired the creation of the website thequotablelesmiles.com, summed up his outlook in a way befitting his reputation. “My strength and my weakness is loyalty,” Miles ED Hardy handbag began, “and I’ll always see it as a strength.”

Smith, Johnson power Hawks past Pacers

9/1/2011, 08:35
ATLANTA (AP)—Josh Smith(notes) likes ugg big kids the pace of Atlanta’s offense when the Hawks are whipping passes around the perimeter. “When we can swing the ball and get open looks, we’re tough to beat,” Smith said. “That’s what we did tonight.” Smith scored 14 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, Joe Johnson(notes) added 24 points and the Hawks beat the Indiana Pacers 108-93 on Saturday night. The Hawks have won four straight and eight of 10. Indiana, which never led, has dropped three in a row and six of seven. Danny Granger(notes) scored 16 for the Pacers, who seemed to lose focus after coach Jim O’Brien’s technical foul midway through the third quarter. Indiana trailed by eight when O’Brien objected to a non-shooting foul called on Tyler Hansbrough(notes) and was whistled for the technical. Johnson hit the ensuing free throw, and the Hawks ended a 17-5 run with 1:51 left in the period to take an 82-62 lead on Smith’s 3-pointer. O’Brien hardly seemed to think the outcome changed on a technical foul. “They’re a terrifically talented basketball team,” O’Brien said. “The combination of (Mike) Bibby and (Al) Horford and Smith and Johnson is really too much for us to handle right now.” Hawks coach Larry Drew started a small lineup with forward Marvin Williams(notes) missing his fifth straight game because of a lower back contusion. Maurice Evans(notes) started at shooting guard to nike air max shoes defend Mike Dunleavy, who finished with six points. Johnson was assigned to Granger, who went 1 for 5 from the field in the second half. “We’re just really not playing well, particularly on the offensive end,” Dunleavy said. “There’s not a lot of rhythm or flow to our offense, and it’s not a whole lot of fun to play or watch right now.” Atlanta has won nine of 12 since Johnson returned Dec. 17 from elbow surgery. Not long before hitting his lone 3, Smith jammed in a putback of Jamal Crawford’s(notes) missed runner to make it 76-59. Drew was proud that Smith, Johnson and Horford each finished with six assists. The Hawks had 27 assists to Indiana’s 17. “We did a great job of passing the basketball,” Drew said. “Everybody was moving the ball around, and I thought Josh Smith had a phenomenal game. We had productivity from a lot of guys. That’s how we’ve been playing, and that’s how we’ve been winning.” Sixth man Crawford has scored at least 20 points in his last five games. “It’s fun,” Horford said. “We’re getting everybody involved. Jamal is starting to play like himself again and Joe, as well. It’s great playing with them.” Hansbrough made his third career start and second in lv handbag two nights. Coming off career highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds in Friday’s three-point home loss to San Antonio, Hansbrough finished with 10 points and five boards. The Pacers seemed flat less than 24 hours after blowing an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter against San Antonio and ending the game by missing 16 of 17 from the field. Indiana lost its seventh straight at Philips Arena and ninth consecutive in the series. “It happens sometimes,” said Bibby, who scored 12 of his 15 in the third. “You play so many games, and you’ll have some good ones and some bad ones. We’ve just had several good ones in a row against them.”

Golf-Pettersson and Byrd take early charge in Kapalua

7/1/2011, 07:54
KAPALUA, Hawaii, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Swede Carl Pettersson and Nike Shox shoes American Jonathan Byrd took advantage of surprisingly calm conditions to set the early first-round pace at the Tournament of Champions on Thursday. Pettersson and Byrd fired matching seven-under-par 66s on the hilly Plantation Course at the Kapalua Resort to take joint control of the PGA Tour’s elite season-opening event. In cool, overcast conditions, Pettersson knocked in a seven-foot birdie at the last to join Byrd atop the leaderboard, the American having holed out with a wedge from 111 yards to eagle the par-four 10th. Ben Crane opened with a 67 while fellow American Bill Haas returned a 68 in the limited-field tournament which brings PGA Tour winners from the previous season. “If you played well and made the putts, you were going to shoot low today,” Pettersson told reporters after carding eight birdies and a lone bogey at the par-four sixth. “It’s unusual to see Kapalua play this way and I was fortunate to be able to take advantage of it.” The Swede, who booked his place in the elite field by winning last year’s Canadian Open, said he had high hopes for this season after putting in long hours of practice over the last two months. “I’ve probably worked harder on my game this off-season than I’ve done any other off-season,” he added. “My game felt good in practice but you never know how it’s going to discount ugg boot be in the tournament. It seems to be good so far.” Byrd, a four-times winner on the U.S. circuit, made an explosive start with four birdies in the first six holes before reaching the turn in five-under 31. “I felt pretty good out there,” the 32-year-old said. “I had a great front nine. I think I hit every green, hit both par-fives in two, hit one wedge shot real close and just kind of had an easy five-under start. “It was so calm starting out. All in all ,you could just be a little more aggressive.” Geoff Ogilvy, champion at Kapalua for the last two years, withdrew from the tournament before the start of Thursday’s opening round because of a badly cut right index finger. The Australian, who had set his sights on a record-equalling third consecutive victory in the season opener, hurt his finger on coral while coming out of the ocean on the Hawaiian island of winter boots 5760 Maui on Monday.

Penn State nixes Bolden’s transfer request

5/1/2011, 05:25
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Penn nike air max shoes State quarterback Rob Bolden’s father says coach Joe Paterno has denied his son’s request to transfer. Robert Bolden Sr. said he wasn’t expecting Paterno to turn down the quarterback in a meeting Tuesday. It’s unclear what Bolden will do next, with spring semester classes starting Monday. Bolden was the first true freshman to open the season at quarterback in Paterno’s 45-year head-coaching tenure with the Nittany Lions (7-6). He started eight games, but suffered a concussion vs. Minnesota. He then lost the job two weeks later to sophomore Matt McGloin after getting pulled vs. Northwestern. Bolden Sr. said his son was only interested in playing at the FBS level. “We were under the impression he would get a release and find himself in a better situation,” Bolden Sr. said. He also said he was wary of talk by coaches that there would be an open competition for the job come spring practice. Earlier Tuesday, Bolden’s mother, Tonia Williams, said she hoped her son would change his mind on transferring, but stood by him. McGloin, the first former walk-on to start at quarterback for Paterno, helped revive the offense in the second half of the season. But he threw five interceptions in ugg boots the 37-24 loss to Florida at the Outback Bowl last week. The future of a third Penn State quarterback, Kevin Newsome, is also unclear. The former top recruit and second-stringer was skipped over on the depth chart by McGloin after Bolden got hurt. Newsome met with Paterno a couple times last month and did not travel for the bowl. He was expected to meet with coaches again this week. A team spokesman said earlier Tuesday that Bolden and Newsome were still on the roster, and that there was no change in status for either player. Penn State also has another touted quarterback recruit in freshman Paul Jones on the roster. Jones redshirted this season.

End of the line? Brett Favre says it is

3/1/2011, 03:36
Brett Favre(notes) was ugg boots the NFL’s ultimate iron man for 19 years, inspiring coaches and teammates with extraordinary toughness and thrilling fans with a daredevil’s verve and a showman’s sense of the moment. Yet the once-irrepressible Favre never looked older or more fragile than in year No. 20. The magic of last season, and most of his brilliant career, never seemed farther away. It had to end some time. And Favre says that time is now. The 41-year-old quarterback sat out Minnesota’s season-ending loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday because of a concussion, and it appears his career ended not on the field trying to rally the Vikings to another victory, but on the sideline as a third-string rookie floundered in Favre’s place. No one—not even Brett Favre—can play forever. “I know it’s time, and that’s OK. It is,” Favre said after the 20-13 loss. “Again, I hold no regrets, and I can’t think of too many players offhand that can walk away and say that. Individually and from a team standpoint, it was way more than I ever dreamed of.” He also retired in 2008 with the Packers and 2009 with the Jets, only to return both times when the football bug bit him in the summer. He knows that there will be doubters again. “I don’t know for me if it’s Cheap Air Max ever easy,” Favre said. “I’m sure throughout this year, the comment has been made that, ‘We’ll wait and see in August or September’ and that’s fine. It’s time. I’m OK with it.” There appears to be one big difference this time. Even if he did want to come back next year, would anyone want him? The Vikings are going to start over. And the market for a 42-year-old quarterback coming off one of his worst seasons — both personally and professionally—doesn’t figure to be hot. If this indeed is the end—for real, this time—for Favre, one of the most colorful and celebrated careers in NFL history concluded with a season filled with interceptions, injuries and insults. He threw 19 interceptions and his 69.9 quarterback rating is the lowest of his career. The Vikings sunk to the bottom of the NFC North after starting the season with Super Bowl aspirations, coach Brad Childress was fired during the season and Favre was fined $50,000 for failure to cooperate with an NFL investigation into allegations that he sent lewd photos and messages to a game-day hostess when both worked for Nike shox NZ the Jets in 2008. Favre’s reputation took a serious hit from the humiliating scandal, which tarnished the image of one of the league’s most popular players. He declined to comment on the fine after the game. His long-awaited union with receiver Randy Moss(notes) also was a spectacular failure and his cherished streak of 297 straight starts ended three weeks ago, with a sprained throwing shoulder making it impossible for Favre to let those famously zip-filled passes rip from his right arm. And just for good measure, the Metrodome roof caved in to provide a perfect metaphor for Favre and the Vikings’ 2010, forcing the Vikings to play “home” games at Detroit and at the University of Minnesota’s outdoor stadium in December. “It’s been a wonderful experience for me,” Favre said. “This year did not work out the way we would have hoped, but that’s football. I don’t regret coming back. I enjoyed Red Monkey jeans my experience here.”

Eaves, Stuart rally Red Wings past Stars

30/12/2010, 08:25
DALLAS (AP)—Patrick Eaves(notes) and MBT shoes the Detroit Red Wings had a lot of fun—at the Dallas Stars’ expense. Eaves had three goals for his first career hat trick, giving him six goals in his last seven games, and the Red Wings scored six straight goals in a 7-3 victory over Dallas on Wednesday night. Normally a checker and penalty killer, Eaves is enjoying his role as an offensive threat. “It feels good on my stick right now,” Eaves said. “Goalies have to make a save when I shoot the puck. It’s fun right now.” Goals by Brad Richards(notes), Mark Fistric(notes) and Jamie Benn(notes) in a 1:14 span of the second period gave the Stars a 3-1 lead. But Eaves struck on the power play after Nicklas Lidstrom(notes) scored at even strength to help the Red Wings tie it at 3 entering the final period. Brad Stuart’s(notes) blast from the point at 5:29 of the third period got past goalie Kari Lehtonen(notes), who was screened by Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader(notes). Kris Draper’s(notes) goal from the left circle at 13:23 of the third, and Eaves’ second of the night 44 seconds later gave Detroit a three-goal edge. Eaves completed his hat trick with an empty-netter at 17:46. Eaves has 11 goals, putting him on pace to surpass his career-high 20-goal season when he was a rookie with Ottawa in 2005-06. “He can shoot the puck and he likes to shoot it,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. “Like anybody who starts scoring, he shoots the puck all the time. Guys that don’t Boss Sweater score, they never shoot the puck. They just keep passing and wonder why they don’t score. I’m glad he’s got it figured out.” Jiri Hudler(notes) contributed a first-period power-play goal, and Jimmy Howard(notes) made 28 saves for the Wings, 4-1-1 in their last six. Detroit improved to 52 points to tighten its grip on first place in the Western Conference. The Red Wings were 2-8-0 in their last 10 meetings with the Stars, winning in Dallas for the first time since Jan. 5, 2008. Hudler got Detroit on the board at 1:36 of the first period, 12 seconds into the game’s first power play. Teammate Todd Bertuzzi(notes) had possession with his back to the net, and he passed to Hudler low in the right circle. Hudler lifted a shot into an open net before Lehtonen could slide over to cover. Richards countered on a breakaway at 5:39 of the second period to tie it. Fistric notched his second goal of the season, and second in two games, on a shot from center point that glanced off Bertuzzi’s stick and got past Howard at 6:24 of the second. Benn needed only 29 more seconds to give his team a two-goal pad when he set up in front of the net and converted Mike Ribeiro’s(notes) centering pass. But the Red Wings picked up their intensity with a 15-shot second period. Lidstrom connected from the slot at 8:56 of the second, and Eaves drew his team even at 3 with a man-advantage goal at 17:38 of the second. Then came a rare third-period meltdown by the Stars. “It’s one of those periods you’ve got to move by,” Richard said. “It doesn’t happen every day. It’s unfortunate, but it happens in this game. Very unusual. We’ll Puma Sandals Women Shoes learn from it and move on.” Dallas was coming off Tuesday night’s 4-2 road win at Nashville. The Red Wings had a two-day break, completing a four-game trip. “We played last night. They were probably over there saying, `They’ll be tired. Let’s get on them quick,” Stars captain Brenden Morrow(notes) said after his team dropped its third straight at home. “We worked hard for two periods and put ourselves in position to win a game. We’ve been good in the third period. It wasn’t for lack of confidence or being tired. We just didn’t execute. We got a little too aggressive, took some penalties, over-pursued on some plays and had blown coverage.”

Canadiens self-destruct in home away from home

27/12/2010, 02:45
UNIONDALE, N.Y. - In what is nike air max shoes becoming a holiday tradition, the Montreal Canadiens played a home game at the Nassau Coliseum. Technically, the New York Islanders were the home team Sunday night but, if the ambience fell short of a game at the Bell Centre, it was at least as spirited as an intra-squad game in Brossard. A blizzard kept many of the local fans huddled in their homes and the result was that the majority of the 3,136 fans were sporting Canadiens jerseys. The visitors filled the arena with chants of "Go Habs go!" during the warmup and accompanied the arena organist with a spirited French rendition of O Canada. The scenario was similar to the Dec. 19 game here last year, but the result was different. Last year, the Canadiens were 3-0 winners and they went to post a 6-1 record on their holiday road trip. But the crowd support failed to do the job Sunday night as the Canadiens finished on the short end of a 4-1 count and fell to 1-3 on their current trip. They have lost six of the last eight games. The Islanders won their third consecutive game behind 41-year-old goaltender Dwayne Roloson(notes), who made 38 saves. He had a shutout until Tomas Plekanec(notes) scored at 7:51 of the third period. The Islanders opened the scoring at 11:04 of the first period when Blake Comeau(notes) went outside of Yannick Weber(notes) and beat Carey Price(notes). The Canadiens made things difficult for themselves in the opening period as they took three penalties. While the Canadiens’ No. 2-ranked penalty-killing unit kept the Islanders off the scoresheet on the power play and Plekanec managed a shorthanded scoring chance, the penalties made it Coach sandals difficult for the Canadiens to find a rhythm. The Canadiens picked up the pace in the second period, outshooting the Islanders 16-7, but Michael Grabner(notes) made it 2-0 when he beat Price on a clean breakaway at 18:18. Brian Gionta(notes) turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Grabner caught defencemen Jaroslav Spacek(notes) and Alexandre Picard flatfooted. The score might have been 3-0, but a video replay failed to show the puck over the goal line following a scramble in front. Price, who had been caught out of the net, was lucky when Mouson missed an open net. John Tavares(notes) poked away at the rebound and Josh Gorges(notes) cleared the puck after it slid past Price. Michael Cammalleri(notes) missed the net following a feed from Gionta early in the period and Roloson made back-to-back saves on Cammalleri and Yannick Weber during the Canadiens’ first power play. The Islanders padded their lead after Max Pacioretty(notes) was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for driving Mark Eaton(notes) into the boards at 1:29 of the third period. P.A. Parenteau(notes) scored at 2:02 and James Wisniewski(notes) made it 4-0 at 4:22. The last goal was scored in a 5-on-3 situation after Scott Gomez(notes) went off for tripping. Pacioretty will probably have a chat with NHL vice-president Colin Campbell later Monday about a possible suspension. The storm that blasted the East Coast forced the Canadiens to change their travel plans. They were scheduled to fly to Washington after Sunday night’s game and practise Monday at the Verizon Centre. Instead, they'll spend the night here and are planning to practise at the Nassau Coliseum before flying to Washington Monday afternoon. They play the Capitals Tuesday night and Bape t-shirt then head to Florida for games Thursday in Tampa and Friday against the Panthers in Sunrise.

Hawks, Thrashers owners settle long legal fight

23/12/2010, 08:59
ATLANTA (AP)—Michael Gearon Nike Shox and Bruce Levenson have emerged as the lead owners of the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Thrashers following a long legal battle and ownership split. Gearon and Levenson confirmed Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press they have purchased Boston-based Steve Belkin’s 30-percent share of the NBA Hawks, NHL Thrashers and Philips Arena. Gearon and Levenson, sitting together Wednesday night at the Hawks’ game against Cleveland, wouldn’t release financial details in which they emerged as managing partners of the ownership group. “At the end of the day we had a business partner we were in a dispute with and we settled that matter,” Levenson said. The ownership split began in 2005 over Belkin’s objection to the Hawks’ trade of Boris Diaw(notes), two first-round draft picks and a $4.9 million trade exception to the Phoenix Suns for guard Joe Johnson(notes). “Now maybe we can move on,” Johnson said after the game. “I haven’t paid a lot of attention to it, but it’s kind of a relief.” Gearon and Levenson have consistently said the long dispute did not affect day-to-day operations of the teams. Levenson, Ed Peskowitz and Todd Foreman are based in Washington, D.C. Gearon is based in Atlanta, as are his New GHD father, Michael Gearon Sr., Rutherford Seydel and Beau Turner. Turner’s father is Ted Turner, the former owner of the teams. Levenson said he has had no success seeking additional investors for the Thrashers. He said he didn’t know if the end of the lawsuit would make it easier to find investors who want to keep the Thrashers in Atlanta. “That’s possible,” Levenson said. “I don’t know if somebody out there was reluctant to raise their hand because of the lawsuit.” Gearon and Levenson said they are more optimistic than ever about the futures of the teams. The Hawks have made back-to-back playoff appearances and have improved their win totals in five straight seasons. The younger Thrashers are competing for first place in the Southeast Division. “The perception is we don’t spend money,” Gearon said about the Hawks. “Yet you look at our roster and the core assets, we’ve kept all of them.” Gearon noted the Hawks re-signed star Joe Johnson to a six-year deal worth about $124 million in the offseason. The agreement ends a long feud that had left Belkin still holding key votes in ownership decisions but unhappy with his role in the group. Belkin asked the other owners to buy out his 30 percent share of the partnership called Atlanta Spirit LLC. But the parties could not agree on the value of Belkin’s share. Then they could not agree on who should set the value. Belkin, backed by a 2006 Maryland circuit court ruling Turbo CHI that was later overturned, then contended he was entitled to buy out his fellow owners at cost and take over the teams.

Richards’ OT goal gives Flyers 2-1 win over Bruins

12/12/2010, 08:54
BOSTON (AP)—Three nights after his would-be sports jerseys overtime goal was disallowed on replay, Mike Richards(notes) didn’t waste any time in finishing off the Boston Bruins. The Philadelphia forward quick-released a wrist shot past Tim Thomas(notes) just 3 seconds away from a shootout, and the Flyers won 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night in their first trip back since their stunning comeback in last year’s Eastern Conference semifinals. Richards’ potential game-winner against San Jose on Wednesday night was disallowed after replay showed the puck crossed the goal line a split-second after time expired. He lost another overtime goal on Nov. 26 when it was waved off because teammate Chris Pronger(notes) was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for blocking the goalie’s view with his glove. “I guess the third time is a charm,” Richards said. “I didn’t know what was on the clock, so I’m glad I didn’t wait. … I kind of surprised him with the shot.” Richards stole the puck on a bad pass by Bruins forward Marc Savard(notes), then skated down the right side, with two teammates to his left on a 3-on-1. As he got to the circle, Richards waited patiently for the play to develop and then wristed it past Thomas to end the game. “I didn’t think he wasn’t going to shoot. I was trying to be ready for that, too,” said Thomas, who made 32 saves. “When he did shoot, he got it off really quick. He didn’t telegraph it, let’s put it that way.” Brian Boucher(notes) stopped 35 shots, and James van Riemsdyk(notes) also scored for Philadelphia. Nathan Horton(notes) scored for the Bruins, who led the Flyers 3-0 in the second round of the playoffs before losing three in a row to force a seventh game. Boston led 3-0 in Game 7 before the Flyers came back and advanced; they eventually reached the Stanley Cup finals, where they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks. Boston beat the Flyers 3-0 on Dec. 1 in the first meeting this season. “I felt like (the fans) wanted to get back at us for what happened last year,” Boucher said. “It definitely had that playoff feel. It’s a great atmosphere. … That game could have gone either way. It was a game where two Polo Long t-shirts teams played well, and we were fortunate to get the two points.” It was the fifth consecutive game that Thomas has allowed two or fewer goals, a streak that has him atop the NHL in every major goaltending category. He made a big save with less than two minutes remaining in overtime, sprawling to knock away a trickling puck that was rolling across the crease after it was deflected in front by van Riemsdyk. But with the Bruins so close to a shootout, Richards ended it. The return to Boston brought out a fair number of Flyers fans in their orange and white sweaters, but they were quickly shouted down by the larger crowd of locals. The fans were loudest after Flyers forward Jody Shelley(notes) took out Adam McQuaid(notes) in the second period. Both players were chasing the puck as it rolled toward the Philadelphia end, and Shelley gave a two-handed shove that knocked McQuaid off his skates; the Bruins defenseman was just able to get his hands up and avoid hitting the boards headfirst. McQuaid stayed down for several minutes; a trainer was helped onto the ice to help him. When he got to his knees, the fans—and the Flyers bench—began cheering, but he stayed there for a couple of minutes before standing up and getting an escort off the ice, with a teammate on each arm. Shelley was given a game misconduct and a five-minute major. He apologized to McQuaid once on the ice and again in the hallway outside the dressing rooms, McQuaid said. “When I was coming off the ice, he was waiting for me there,” said McQuaid, who returned in the third period. “He said he was sorry and he didn’t mean to, so I’ve just got to take what he says.” McQuaid said he had the wind knocked out of him and said it was not a head injury. “They did a few tests and I got checked out and everything,” he said. The Bruins managed only five shots during the penalty and failed to score. The Flyers finally scored with 81 seconds left in the second period when Jeff Carter(notes) brought the puck down the left side and crossed it to van Riemsdyk, who one-timed a shot inside the right post. But Boston tied it Boss business suit with 10:17 left in the third when David Krejci(notes) sent the puck into the middle, where Milan Lucic(notes), Nathan Horton and Pronger were all fighting for position. Pronger knocked it down, but Horton wound up with it and wristed a shot past Boucher to tie the game.

Joseph leads No. 22 Minnesota over Saint Joseph’s

9/12/2010, 09:14
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—No. 22 Minnesota passed its gucci sneakers first true road test of the season on Wednesday night. Devoe Joseph scored 19 points, including a 3-pointer to start a key second-half stretch, and the Gophers beat Saint Joseph’s 83-73. Blake Hoffarber added 14 points for the Gophers (8-1), who were playing their first road game in the United States. Minnesota’s only other games off campus were in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Although Saint Joseph’s features an inexperienced group this season, the cozy, 4,200-seat Hagan Arena always has been tough on visitors. Minnesota coach Tubby Smith stood firm in his decision to agree to play at Hagan Arena, rather than the 8,700-seat Palestra or 20,000-seat Wells Fargo Center, as many big time programs do against Saint Joseph’s. “They play on our campus and we play on their campus,” Smith said. “It helps us to go into a hostile arena and get in this environment. We have a lot of guts and some toughness.” Trevor Mbakwe had 12 points and 16 rebounds for Minnesota, while Ralph Sampson III and Maurice Walker both had 10 points. Carl Jones led Saint Joseph’s with a career-high 29 points and Langston Galloway added 21 for the Hawks (3-6), who have lost four straight. The Gophers led by as many as 13 points late in the first half, but saw their lead trimmed to 38-37 3:23 into the second half. But Minnesota hit three 3-pointers, two by Hoffarber, during a decisive 13-0 run over a 3:02 span that gave the Gophers a commanding 51-37 lead with 13:35 left. Joseph and Hoffarber hit consecutive 3-pointers to start Air Max 90 Shoes the spurt and Hoffarber capped the run with another 3 that gave Minnesota the 14-point lead, its largest of the game. “Being on the road in a one-point game it gives them that hope of being in it,” Joseph said. “It’s always important to have that gap where you keep the crowd and everyone calmed down.” Hoffarber was 4 for 8 from the field and made 4 of 6 from 3-point range. “I tend to like these venues,” he said. “It kind of feels like high school or something.” Smith credited the Gophers’ defense for the game-changing sequence. During the 13-0 run, the Hawks were 0 for 3 from the field with a turnover, while Minnesota made 4 of its 5 attempts. “The key is defense,” Smith said. “You get stops and it creates opportunities.” Saint Joseph’s pulled as close as five on four occasions, the last when it was 68-63 with 4:04 left. But Joseph countered with a 3 from the right wing to put the Gophers up 71-63 with 3:51 left. “When we were right there, we didn’t make that next play,” Saint Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli said. Saint Joseph’s pulled as close as five on four occasions, the last when it was 68-63 with 4:04 left. But Joseph countered with a 3 from the right wing to put the Gophers up 71-63 with 3:51 left. Minnesota has given up 40 3-pointers in their last four games and the Hawks tried but couldn’t take advantage of that porous perimeter defense, shooting 9 for 29 from long range, including 3 for 17 in the first half. The Hawks trailed 36-26 at halftime, but scored 11 of Nike Dunk Shoes the first 13 points after the break to pull within 36-37 3:23 into the half. The Hawks opened the second half going 4 for 5 from the field, while the Gophers missed five of their first six shots.

England wins 2nd Ashes test after Aussie collapse

7/12/2010, 08:38
ADELAIDE, Australia (AP)—Graeme scarf Swann took three of the last six wickets to tumble Tuesday as England dismissed Australia for 304 to complete a comprehensive innings and 71-run victory in the second Ashes test. England wrapped up the test and a 1-0 series lead before lunch on the final day, with Swann, Jimmy Anderson and Steven Finn combining to claim the last six wickets for 66 runs after Australia had resumed at 238-4 with high hopes of salvaging a draw or being saved by forecast rain. “We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves, but if we keep these standards we have a good chance of winning the series,” England captain Andrew Strauss said. The third test starts Dec. 16 in Perth and England, which holds the Ashes after winning at home last year, could conceivably retain the old urn by taking a 2-0 lead ahead of the fourth and fifth tests in Melbourne and Sydney. “We’ve been totally outplayed this game, there’s no hiding that,” Australia captain Ricky Ponting said. “Now we have to find a way to get better for Perth. “No doubt it’s a bad loss for us, there’s no hiding that fact, an innings and 70 runs having won the toss on a good Adelaide wicket, probably just about says it all.” Australia rallied for a stunning comeback win at Adelaide in the previous Ashes series at home, and went on to complete a 5-0 series sweep to avenge losing the previous series in England. But after a draw to open this series in Brisbane and the loss in Adelaide, Ponting’s squad looks vulnerable to slumping to its first Ashes series loss on Australian soil in more than two decades. After Michael Clarke was out on the last ball Monday evening to part-time spinner Kevin Pietersen, Australia’s hopes rested on Mike Hussey working with the middle order and tailenders. But Finn made the crucial breakthrough when Hussey mistimed a pull to Anderson at mid-on to depart for 52. Three wickets in four balls effectively ended Australia’s chances of a draw. Anderson had Brad Haddin caught behind for 12 and trapped Ryan Harris lbw with consecutive deliveries. Harris’ exit gave him two first-ball dismissals, known as a “king pair.” He is only the second Australian batsman after Adam Gilchrist in 2001 who has had that dubious milestone in test cricket. Two balls later, Swann had Marcus North trapped lbw for New Balance Women Shoes 22. England’s appeal was initially turned down but the video umpire ruled that the ball had struck the Australian batsman in front of the stumps and would have gone on to dislodge the bails. Swann then bowled Xavier Doherty and Peter Siddle to finish with a five-wicket haul and complete England’s 100th test victory over Australia. Before the wickets fell, North had a reprieve on 3 when Swann struck his pad but he was adjudged not out by the video umpire. A chance from Hussey was dropped in the same over. But England took the new ball and three overs later, the breakthroughs followed. The only setback for England was the abdominal injury for Stuart Broad which will rule the paceman out for the serious. Australia’s woes continued with veteran opener Simon Katich injuring his Achilles and likely to miss the remainder of the series. Kevin Pietersen was voted player of the match after scoring a career-best 227 in England’s 620-5 declared—helping the visitors to a 375-run first-innings lead—and taking the crucial wicket of Clarke to end the fourth day. “It’s pretty incredible, (England) having been so bad four years ago to be Gucci High Shoes 1-0 up in the Ashes,” Pietersen said. “If we keep doing the right things, we’ll win the Ashes.”

Cavs didn’t appreciate LeBron’s words, actions

4/12/2010, 11:38
CLEVELAND (AP)—LeBron James(notes) may NFL jerseys wholesale have ruined another friendship back in Ohio. Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson(notes) didn’t appreciate some of James’ words and actions on Thursday during the Miami star’s heated homecoming to Cleveland. James, who scored 38 points in the Heat’s 118-90 win, was subjected to almost constant booing, taunts and profanity. According to Gibson, James dished out a little of his own. “Some things went on last night,” Gibson said, “that I didn’t like.” James engaged in some trash talk with Cleveland’s bench, jawing at some coaches and former teammates. After making a tough, baseline jumper while scoring 24 points in the third quarter, James spun just in front of Cleveland’s players and mouthed UGG Elsey wedge Boots something in their direction. Later, he and a smiling Gibson exchanged words. Gibson also took issue with comments that it appeared the Cavaliers were acting too outwardly friendly toward James, who played seven seasons in Cleveland. Center Anderson Varejao(notes) hugged James as the teams lined up for tip-off and a few players shook hands or bumped fists with the two-time defending league MVP. “I’ve heard that, and that kind of rubs me the wrong way,” Gibson said. “We all know LeBron and we all know that he enjoys being in front of the camera. To say we were fraternizing and being friendly … nobody knows what was said and the things that were said UGG Roxy Boots probably could not be repeated right now. We wanted to win the game and those guys brought it to us.” The Cavaliers are now 7-11 without James. “I think people, from the outside looking in, might say we were laughing and joking with him, but if you could hear the things that were said, you would know that wasn’t the case,” Gibson said. “There was nothing friendly about the conversation we had.” Gibson said the evening soured his relationship with James, his teammate for four years. Gibson was also upset by the Cavaliers’ awful play in front of their rowdy fans, who had waited five months to vent at James for the way he announced his decision to UGG Ultra Tall Boots leave. “I didn’t like the way we performed,” he said.

China 'backs Korean reunification'

30/11/2010, 09:49
Chinese officials ugg boots increasingly doubt the usefulness of neighbouring North Korea as an ally and would support the reunification of the peninsula if the communist state were to collapse, according to leaked US diplomatic cables. The latest documents released by the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks on Tuesday detail conversations between US officials and Chinese diplomats, as well as a senior South Korean official's discussion with his Chinese counterparts. Cheng Guoping, the Chinese ambassador to Kazakhstan, was reported to have told Richard Hoagland, the US ambassador, that "China hopes for peaceful reunification in the long-term, but he expects the two countries to remain separate in the short-term". Guoping was quoted as telling Hoagland that China's objectives in North Korea were to ensure they honour their commitments on non-proliferation, maintain stability, and "don’t drive [Kim Jong-il] mad". Pyongyang's protector The cable said that Guoping suggested that Kim Jong-il’s decision to anoint his youngest son as his successor was driven more by Kim's deteriorating health than any carefully planned strategy. "They had no time to plan for this," he was quoted as saying, adding that Kim Jong-il's announcement was designed to send a message to the military that he held the power. Beijing has long been considered Pyongyang's protector, as seen during the recent crisis over the shelling of a South Korean island close to a disputed maritime border in the Yellow Sea. In the aftermath of the incident, which left at least four people dead and saw both nations increase their military readiness, Washington appealed to Beijing to rein in the North. China responded by calling for a meeting of world powers to diffuse tensions. But in another cable from Seoul, South Korea's capital, the country's then vice-foreign minister was quoted as telling Kathleen Stephens, the US ambassador, that two high-level Chinese officials told him they "believed Korea should be unified under ROK [South Korea] control". Chun Yung-woo, now the national security advisor to Cheap Air Max South Korea's president, said that the younger generation of Communist leaders in Beijing did not regard North Korea as a useful or reliable ally and would not risk a renewal of armed conflict on the Korean peninsula, the cable said. Those younger leaders, Chun said, "would be comfortable with a reunited Korea controlled by Seoul and anchored to the United States in a benign alliance". He reportedly dismissed the prospect of Chinese military intervention in the event of North Korea's collapse, noting that China’s strategic economic interests now lie with the United States, Japan, and South Korea, not with North Korea. Chun was quoted as saying that he believed that the North would cease to function as a state within three years of Kim Jong-il's death and said Beijing had "no will" to use its economic leverage to change the country's political policies. Chinese 'conundrum' Andrew Leung, the chairman and CEO of International Consultants Limited in Hong Kong, told Al Jazeera China was in a "conundrum" over the future of North Korea. "China doesn't want to cause an immediate collapse of the regime and force reunification because a divided Korea could at least provide a possible buffer against encirclement," he said. "An immediate collapse of North Korea could also not be good for South Korea. If you look at the unification of the two Germany's, you have got to wait until the conditions are right and it could drag down the economy in South Korea quite dramatically." The diplomatic memos were released as North Korea announced details of an expanded nuclear programme, saying it has thousands of working centrifuges in a new uranium enrichment plant. In the cable from the US ambassador to Kazakhstan, China's Guoping UGG Brookfield Tall Boots described the North's nuclear programme as "very troublesome". He said that China "opposes North Korea's nuclear testing and is working to achieve peace and stability on the Korean peninsula," the cable said.

Strauss out but England pass Australia's tally

28/11/2010, 09:38
BRISBANE, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Andrew gucci shoes Strauss was out for 110 but his opening partner Alastair Cook was approaching his own century as England reached tea with a lead of 17 runs on the fourth day of the first Ashes test against Australia on Sunday. Cook, whose stand of 188 with Strauss was England's best in a test at the Gabba, was unbeaten on 98 and Jonathan Trott had contributed 23 to help the tourists, who made 260 in their first innings, to 238-1. Australia made 481 in their first effort. Skipper Strauss claimed his 19th test century -- his first for 16 months -- soon after lunch but was clearly furious with himself after being stumped by Brad Haddin off the occasional spin bowling of Marcus North. His innings had not been without chances, most notably an inside edge to a Peter Siddle delivery when he was on 61 that somehow missed the wicket and a glorious catching chance off Xavier Doherty that Mitchell Johnson spilled when he was on 70. Johnson's blunder summed up a difficult day for the quick and his fellow bowlers as they struggled to get anything out of the Gabba pitch despite heavy cloud cover. Resuming on 19-0 after surviving 15 overs on Saturday, Strauss and Cook looked comfortable against Australia's pace attack of Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle, who took a hat-trick in England's first innings. Strauss cut a Doherty delivery down to third man for four to record his century, which included 15 fours, but England may yet rue his dismissal. Australian opener Simon Katich took a blow to his leg when fielding in close which forced him to leave the field. He had not returned by the time of the second break of the day. Still facing a tough two days to save the test, England will winter ugg boots be hoping to bat at least until lunchtime on Monday and accumulate a second innings score in excess of 450.

Banged-up Cousins facing last regular-season test

24/11/2010, 08:30
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP)—Kirk 2010 handbag Cousins walked calmly over to a group of reporters and declared himself healthy. Or at least, a lot healthier than he looked last weekend. Cousins fought through sprains to his left shoulder and left ankle Saturday, helping the 11th-ranked Spartans rally to a 35-31 win over Purdue. He was noticeably hobbling at times, but with the Big Ten title on the line this weekend at Penn State, Cousins is determined to tough it out for one more regular-season game. “I’m feeling better, definitely,” Cousins said. “It took some time to get healed up, but getting much better, and every day I’ll continue to get better.” Cousins looked fine Tuesday night, but the real test will come when he takes the field against the Nittany Lions. Michigan State (10-1, 6-1 Big Ten) can clinch at least a tie for the conference title with a win, although the Spartans probably need Ohio State to lose to Michigan to have a chance at the Rose Bowl. Coach Mark Dantonio said only that he thought Cousins was “feeling good”— Dantonio doesn’t like to discuss injuries. Cousins said his shoulder has been bothering him for a month, but his ailments weren’t really noticeable until last weekend. He missed a series in the first half after aggravating the shoulder, and the ankle was also a problem. Cousins said he nearly pulled himself out of the game, but he got a shot for his shoulder and another for the ankle at halftime. “That’s kind of a deal that you have to do when you get banged up to get through the game,” he said. “That’s not an uncommon deal.” Cousins ended up throwing three touchdown passes and running for the winning score in the fourth quarter. That ended an erratic stretch for Cousins in which he threw three interceptions in a loss to Iowa and went 9 of 20 in a win over Minnesota. Cousins was criticized for throwing off his back foot—but it turns out the injured ankle had a lot to do with that. “It was probably the number one reason,” he said. “But at EMU Australia Boots the same time, toughness is the ability to block out that pain and still not lose your mechanics.” Cousins didn’t give too many details about what he’s been able to do at practice, but it’s clear he’s looking forward to the long break between this weekend’s game and whatever bowl the Spartans end up going to. “It’s something where rest is what’s going to be best for it, but you can’t just rest and shut it down. You just try to walk that fine line,” he said. “We’ve got to push through one more time.”

Falcons overpower Rams 34-17

22/11/2010, 09:29
ST. LOUIS (AP)—Not too many big plays for scarf the Atlanta Falcons. An avalanche of little plays did the trick. Matt Ryan(notes) threw two touchdown passes and directed an offense so dominant that three St. Louis Rams defenders left with cramps in a 34-17 victory Sunday. All those chip-shot field goals added up, too. “We’d like to score more touchdowns,” Ryan said. “All in all, three points is good offensively.” Sam Bradford(notes) had a pair of touchdown passes for the Rams and set an NFL rookie record with 169 consecutive passes without an interception. The streak ended when William Moore(notes) picked off a shovel pass at the 2 with 3:24 to go, snuffing a drive that could have made it a one-score game. “I wish it would have gone 98 (yards),” Moore said. “But overall it was just a huge play.” Moore returned the ball only 12 yards. Still, it was the clincher as the Falcons (8-2) won their fourth in a row and ended the Rams’ four-game home winning streak. “I’ve got to make sure it’s there,” Bradford said. “I can’t pitch it in there blind.” Bradford had a big start with 99 yards passing and a touchdown in the first quarter. The Rams (4-6) had six first downs in the first quarter, but only nine the rest of the way, and Bradford finished 27 for 42 for 233 yards. “We knew time of possession was going to be a big part of this game,” Bradford said. “We knew if we wanted a chance to win we had to be on the field just as much as they were, and that wasn’t the case.” Ryan was 26 of 39 for 253 yards with touchdown passes to Brian Finneran(notes) and Justin Peelle(notes), and Roddy White(notes) set up scores with nine catches for 83 yards. Ryan has five touchdown passes without an interception the last two games and threw for gains of 10 yards or better to seven receivers. “We’ve been efficient offensively the past four or uggs boot five weeks,” Ryan said. “Going forward, that’s kind of a recipe for success. You become difficult to beat.” The St. Louis defense forced three short field goals, but couldn’t get off the field quickly enough against an Atlanta offense that had a pair of drives that lasted 6:39 and 7:06 and held the ball for nearly 36 minutes. The Rams were so gassed that safety Oshiomoghe Atogwe and cornerbacks Ron Bartell(notes) and Justin King(notes) all missed time with cramps. Atlanta ran 70 plays, most of it in the no-huddle. St. Louis ran 54 plays. “When you’re out there and trying to cover, it catches up to you,” Bartell said. “We have to do a better job, obviously, as far as making sure we hydrate properly before the game.” Michael Turner(notes) was untouched on a 39-yard run the first play after the two-minute warning and White caught a 2-point conversion pass. Turner had 131 yards on 28 carries for his fourth 100-yard game. The Rams allowed no more than 17 points their first five home games. St. Louis led 10-3 early in the second quarter after Josh Brown(notes) hit a season-best 53-yard field goal, and again at 17-16 early in the third after Bradford and Brandon Gibson(notes) hooked up on a 13-yard fade pattern. The interception was the first in five games for Bradford, the No. 1 pick, who thrived despite a set of undistinguished pass catchers. Bradford showed off his strong arm on his first touchdown pass, rolling out to the right and throwing against the grain on a 25-yard completion to rookie tight end Mike Hoomanawanui. Eric Weems(notes) had a 55-yard kickoff return in Nike Kobe Bryant shoes the second quarter before a helmet-less Jerome Murphy(notes) finally ran him down at the Rams 47, setting up the Finneran score.
